The Divide Makes New England Premiere in Concord, N.H.
On Thursday night, October 18, The Divide played to a sold-out house at Red River Theatres in Concord, N.H. The event was sponsored by The Hotel Concord and all proceeds from ticket sales were donated to support the nonprofit theatre in its efforts to bring the best of independent cinema to the Concord area.
The event was hosted in the theatre’s Lincoln Financial Cinema and featured a lively post-film Q&A with director/lead actor Perry King (Riptide, The Lords of Flatbush, The Day After Tomorrow), screenwriter and Concord resident Jana Brown, and lead actress Sara Arrington (The Jungle Book, Bosch).
The Divide is an award-winning drama that features a main character suffering from memory loss. The film’s presentation was part of Red River’s birthday week celebration. Red River will be playing The Divide when it enters its theatrical release, November 16.
The Divide is a story about the drama of ordinary life, following Sam Kincaid (King), who is suffering from the onset of dementia in 1976, when Alzheimer’s did not yet have a formal name. Sam is supported by an unlikely ally in migrant ranch hand Luke (Bryan Kaplan: Fray), who summons Sam’s estranged daughter, Sarah (Arrington), to help with Sam’s growing memory lapses. The film is set in one of the worst droughts in California history, a plight that mirrors the dry patches in the characters’ lives.
So far, the film has enjoyed significant success on its festival tour. In May, The Divide played at the Marche Du Film at Cannes. The Alzheimer’s Association of New Mexico co-sponsored The Divide’s screening at the Albuquerque Film & Music Experience, where it was awarded Best Feature Film. At the Arizona International Film Festival, the film was named Best Dramatic Feature and Perry King earned a Special Jury Award for Performance. The Divide was awarded the Platinum Remi for Best Western at WorldFest Houston, Best Western and Best First Time Screenwriter from the Los Angeles Film Awards, Best Foreign Feature and Best First Time Director from the London Independent Film Awards, and Best Feature Film at San Pedro International Film Festival. The Divide also has received awards for cinematography, while lead actress Sara Arrington and supporting actor Luke Colombero have earned multiple accolades for their performances.
The film recently drew praise from Cowboys & Indians reviewer Joe Leydon, who wrote, “King gives an extraordinary performance as Sam Kincaid, a Northern California rancher who, during the drought of 1976, struggles to remember what is important – and transcend what he cannot forget – as he is gradually diminished by Alzheimer’s disease at a time when the malady was not yet acknowledged as anything other than advancing senility....Working in concert with screenwriter Jana Brown, he has fashioned an uncommonly compelling and emotionally rich drama.”
